August 27, 2013 Yorktown Victory Center

The tobacco drying barn...at the Yorktown Victory Center's farm museum.

One 'ol woodshop...

The main farmhouse interior.

"The laundry"

Tobacco and cotton crops

Yorktown was noted for its high quality tobacco.

Ron gives some good advice to General George Washington.  We know the General was listening intently because he's smiling.

More help for George as he meets with General Cornwallis!

Cannon by the waterfront.

Ah yes, Spirit Journey - she's a 'looker' and numerous people have stopped by - we also welcomed Ron (U.S.N.) and Holly (formerly served in the U.S. Coast Guard) on board a few days ago.

Concert tonight on the waterfront - the Big Band Sound - musicians were superb!

August 26, 2013 Williamsburg and Victory Center

Ron is always up first - he pops out of bed like toast - and greeted the morning sunshine!

Restaurants along the Yorktown waterfront.  Yummmmm...the fish tacos and crab dip!

One of the "redoubts" - you might say this was like a "defensive trench" dug by the Revolutionary War soldiers, and protected by the "sharpened" posts entrenched on the perimeter.

View of a redoubt from a different angle.

(Better explanation of a redoubt than the one provided above.)

We visited the "Yorktown Victory Center" which featured an indoor museum of Revolutionary War and Civil War artifacts and history displays, as well as two 'living' outdoor museums - one, a 'working farm' and the second, a soldiers' encampment, as they would have been in the late 18th century America.

These buildings were from the farm - looking at the 'kitchen' building.

Some pics from Colonial Williamsburg...

Williamsburg gardens...

 "Surveying" the beautiful gardens...

The 'foyer' of the Governor's Palace at Williamsburg.  Swords and rifles "adorned" each wall.

Spinning and weaving fabrics...

Church cemetery on the grounds of Williamsburg's Bruton Parish Church...the church has been in continuous use since the 1600's...

Inside the exquisite church...

Marker inside the church...

Williamsburg's 'magazine' building interior - housing the weapons and other 'fighting supplies'.

The "Magazine."

The Capitol

He looks like a 'governor' doesn't he?

Awaiting General Benedict Arnold outside The Capitol building...

The federal architecture is stunning!

Doe, a deer, a female deer...minding her own business in a field in Yorktown.

Yorktown's Custom House.

August 25, 2013 Yorktown Harbor & Battlefield

This is the first real 'house boat' we've seen like this one!  Floated pretty well given the water conditions!

Yorktown Fife and Drum Corps performed at one of the battlefields

These were all young high-schoolers, and they put on a terrific performance!

From the battlefield area overlooking the York River

Yorktown Victory Monument - it's impressive!

The head of the statue was knocked off by lightning and was replaced .....

Many early homes dating into the 1600's

The Moore House where the surrender of the British troops was negotiated after the last battle of Yorktown !  America was FREE!

We enjoyed seeing all the brick fences and homes

Michele the Navigator keeps us on 'track' on land and sea!

Lot's of nice walking opportunities.. we chalked up about 6 miles today.....  no wonder our feet hurt!

A local group plays at the church and cemetery... everyone brought chairs and snacks

somehow we always find the old cemetery's... this one is a wonderful resting place

Grace Episcopal Church...built in the 1600's

Yorktown River Landing Marina - Spirit Journey is just to the left center of the picture but not visible .....

Schooners in the bay!

The town's beaches get a lot of use!  This picture is taken from the flybridge on Spirit Journey.
